Your filter should be cleaned when the pressure gauge reads about 8 to 10 psi above its clean starting pressure, and at least a couple of times a year in Arizona dust country, whether the gauge says so or not.
Cartridge filters get hosed and soaked, DE filters get backwashed and recharged, and sand filters eventually need new sand. A clean filter means clearer water and a pump that doesn't have to fight for every gallon.
